Yesterday, nominations closed at 5pm, EDT for open seats on the KBA Board of Directors for new two-year terms beginning on January 1, 2019.
In Radio District 4, Mark Buckles of Heritage Media Of Kentucky was nominated unopposed and will begin serving his second term.
In Radio District 6, an election will be held between Mike Tarter of Forcht Broadcasting who currently holds the seat and Kelly Wallingford of Wallingford Broadcasting Company, Inc.
In Radio District 8, Randy Thompson of WKCB AM & FM was nominated unopposed and will begin serving his second term.
An election will be held for the position of Public Radio Director, between Chad Lampe of WKMS / Murray State University who currently holds the seat and Tom Godell of WUKY / University of Kentucky.
Additionally, Ken Selvaggi of WAVE News was unopposed and will serve another term as Television Director – Louisville Market.
According to the KBA bylaws, ballots will be sent electronically (i.e. email) to the general managers of districts where there is more than one candidate. Those ballots will be emailed on Monday, September 10, 2018 are due back by close-of-business (5pm EDT) on Thursday, September 20, 2017.

Election Ballots will be emailed to stations via Constant Contact Monday, September 10, 2018 at 9am (EDT). Ballots are due to KBA headquarters no later than 5pm (EDT) on Thursday, September 20, 2018. Remember, only one vote per station is permitted. Votes will be weighted by the amount of stations owned within each district.

KBA Announces 2018-19 Harry Barfield Scholarship Recipients

The Kentucky Broadcasters Association announces the recipients of its 27th annual Harry Barfield Scholarship awards program.
Five new recipients received $2,500 scholarships for the 2018-19 academic year: Hayley Robb, Natalie Turner, Rebecca Cook and Miles Schroader all of Western Kentucky University (WKU) and Jeff Reno of Asbury University.
The scholarships are awarded through a competitive application process which includes academic achievement, the recommendation of a faculty member, and extracurricular activities. The awards are renewable for a second year of undergraduate study provided recipients continue to meet specified criteria.
Two students who received the KBA Barfield Scholarship in 2017-18 have had their award, also valued at $2,500, renewed for the 2018-19 academic year: Brady Trapnell of the University of Kentucky and Charles “Chas” Jenkins of Morehead State University.
“The KBA is proud to be able to help these talented students pursue their higher education,” said Chris Winkle, President/CEO of KBA. “This year’s total of $17,500 in scholarship awards means the KBA now has awarded a total of $282,500 in scholarships since the inception of the program in the 1992-93 academic year. Many of these recipients have gone on to successful careers in broadcasting and other related communications fields.”
The program is named in honor of Harry Barfield, the late president and chairman of WLEX-TV in Lexington.
Chad Lampe, a current KBA Board Member and Education Committee Chair, administered the program.

ANDERSON TAKES THE REIGNS AT WKYT
Gray Television announced Jeff Anderson as WKYT’s new General Manager. Anderson previously served as the Director of Local and Digital Sales at WKYT since early 2014. As a result of the succession, Gray Regional Vice President and WKYT general manager Chris Mossman will now oversee Gray Television stations on a full-time basis in the new position of Television Vice President.

Kentucky Today, the online newspaper and wire service with reporters around the state, is offering free newscasts to radio stations beginning Oct. 1. Roger Alford, the longtime Associated Press correspondent in Kentucky who is now editor of Kentucky Today, is heading up the initiative with help from Kentucky Today broadcast editor Brandon Porter and Capitol reporter Tom Latek, both of whom have extensive backgrounds in radio. Kentucky Today, a member of the Kentucky Broadcasters Association, will offer radio stations a series of newscasts each day, Monday through Friday. The newscasts will be dedicated to Kentucky news only – news that is relevant and of broad interest to listeners in every city and town across the state. To help meet your needs, some of the newscasts will be one minute in length while others will be two and a half minutes. The plan is to produce roughly five fresh newscasts of both lengths each day. That’s 10 total. You may use as many or as few of them as you like. “We understand the financial strain radio stations have been under for decades now, and how that financial strain has impacted their ability to supply state-level news to listeners,” Alford said. “Kentucky Today is in a position to help with that.”
